Look At Him Now

June 2010

One day, about a year or so ago, a young man walked through our doors, seeking a place to stay. He explained that he just got out of prison and said he had done some stupid things in his youth and was ready to make a change for the better. After a meeting with Case Management, he hit the streets looking for a job. In a little more than a week he had not one job, but two, both within walking distance of the shelter. He labored some days 12 to 16 hours. He displayed great work ethic and dependability and was frequently called into work to fill the shifts of co-workers who were not as dependable. At the end of four months he had saved up enough money to get his own modest apartment. A little after that, he was promoted to manager at one of his jobs and was able to relinquish the other. Now days, every once in a while, I see him on the street, heading home or to work. A great feeling of pride and amazement runs through my heart, as I think, no one would ever know that that man was once in prison, no one would ever know that that man was once homeless. Look at him now! Yes, look at him now.

An Attitude of Gratitude

I came to Morgantown as I was in need of surgery. I had to have a cancer tumor removed and only one of two surgeons in WV did this type of surgery. Follow-up treatments required two weekly visits for two months. I was unable to maintain my previous employment and apartment due to this medical need, ergo I needed a place to stay. I heard of the Bartlett House and came here. I was very pleased to find shelter and a hot meal, but I also discovered that they offered an array of other services. The staff and case managers act as liaisons with the other community service organizations. Some referrals offered are to: Health Right, an agency that provides health care for the homeless population and others. They also coordinate services with West Virginia Employment Commission that provides needed job training and placement. Psychological and substance abuse services are also made available.

During my stay here at Bartlett House, I have seen many people come through these doors with feelings of low self-esteem and hopelessness. Many of these people have received employment at WVU through the auspices of Mountaineer Temporary Services, as I have. I have seen people feeling good about themselves and doing positive things with their lives, individuals and families moving forward establishing independent living environments for themselves.

The Bartlett House is a homeless shelter, but so much more than that. It is truly a blessing in a time when there is so much need. I am grateful everyday for this place.
