MISSION STATEMENT

Bartlett House addresses homeless issues by providing for emergency food, shelter and medical referrals first, then one-to-one comprehensive case management to break the cycle of homelessness. We are committed to providing shelter that meets a persons basic needs in an atmosphere where people are treated with dignity and respect.

 

FUNDING AND SUPPORT

This agency is funded in part under an Agreement with the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources, Bureau for Children and Families, Office of Social Services. Additional funding is provided by United Way of Monongalia and Preston Counties, private contributions, FEMA, West Virginia Emergency Shelter Grants Program, Monongalia County Commission and private foundations.

It has been 27 years since Bartlett House first opened its doors. Over the years our agency has expanded in size and services to meet the needs of our clients. As our clients’ needs changed, so did our service provisions.

Our Logo incorporates the comprehensive services currently offered by Bartlett House, Inc. The “Hands” lifting the “House” symbolizes a “hand up not a hand out” by providing shelter in an atmosphere of dignity, compassion, and respect to those experiencing homelessness. Surrounding the house are the four key services offered by Bartlett House aimed at promoting self-sufficiency while still proving the basic human needs of food and shelter. The upper left hand corner displays a “Graduation Cap” symbolizing the “Life Skills Training Classes” offered at Bartlett House. These classes include topics from parenting classes to money management and budgeting. The upper right hand corner displays a “Caduceus” representing the importance of medical and psychological referrals as carried out by the case managers of our agency. Our staff connects our clients with the necessary services of Milan Puskar Health Right, Valley Mental Health, Chestnut Ridge Hospital, Medicaid and Medicare, hospitals, clinics, treatment facilities and many more. The lower left-hand corner displays the directional facing on a “Compass” symbolizing Bartlett House’s comprehensive Case Management Program. Our clients are provided with a case manager who assists them in developing an individualized “Service Plan”. Service Plans consist of a list of obtainable goals and objectives aimed at addressing the pertinent issues which contributed to each client’s state of homelessness. Service Plans are revised as goals are reached to promote continued growth. Finally, the lower right hand corner displays an “Apple” representing food. Bartlett House staff provides breakfast and dinner Monday through Friday and all three meals on weekends and holidays. In addition, Bartlett House serves as a food pantry to clients as they transition from our shelter to their new home and in emergency situations where food is needed for previous clients.

About Us

Bartlett House, Inc. was founded in 1985 as a nonprofit organization to meet the needs of the homeless population in Monongalia County, West Virginia and surrounding areas. Since 1990, Bartlett House has been housed at 1110 University Avenue in Morgantown, WV - open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The shelter can house up to 72 men, women and children.

 

In West Virginia the problem of homelessness has become more obvious in recent years. There is no easy way to prdict who will be next. Experience has shown us that there are two basic types of homelessness: Crisis Poverty and Chronic Homelessness. Many factors may have contributed not only to making these persons homeless. Major personal crisis, unemployment, lack of affordable housing - but also to creating barriers to alleviating the situation. Mental illness, substance abuse, chronic disability. Regardless of the reason, the key is to provide quick and appropriate intervention that deals with both a person's basic emergency needs, as well as long-term isses - to start them on their journey to self-sufficiency and independence!
